Gastric sleeve
In this procedure we remove 85% of the gastric tissue, mainly the gastric fundus and the greater curvature of the stomach. The gastric fundus contains Ghrelin secreting cells (Ghrelin is a hormone that stimulates appetite). In this way, we create a new tubular shaped stomach whose capacity is only 3 ounces.
These changes give a Gastric Sleeve:
- Lower gastric capacity for food
- Less nutrient malabsorption
- Decreased appetite
- Weight loss that achieves control of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension
In-hospital stay: two nights.
Recovery time: two days of rest at home and then we recommend moderate duty for a month (e.g. office work).
This surgery is ideal for patients with type I obesity or greater and with obesity-related diseases and without severe gastric reflux or previous bariatric surgeries.
Gastric bypass:
In this procedure, we divide the stomach in two, creating a new one called gastric pouch which has less capacity (1 ounce). Subsequently, we create 2 anastomoses (joints between the digestive tract). One between stomach and small intestine; and another between 2 segments of the distal small intestine. These anastomoses generate 3 separate intestinal limbs. The first one or alimentary “Roux” limb that will bring food from the new gastric pouch. The second one or biliopancreatic limb, that will take the digestive juices of stomach, pancreas and bile. And the third one or common channel where digestion begins and absorption of nutriments takes place.
Some of the benefits of a Roux-en- Y Gastric Bypass are:
- Lower gastric capacity for food
- Less absorption of calories and nutrients
- Decreased gastroesophageal reflux
- Hormonal and weight changes that help control diseases such as diabetes and hypertension
In-hospital stay: two nights.
Recovery time: two days of rest at home and then we recommend moderate duty for a month (e.g. office work).
Ideal for patients with type II or greater obesity and with obesity related diseases. Patients with gastric reflux disease and obesity. Patients with failed previous bariatric surgeries.
Intragastric Balloon:
It is an outpatient endoscopic procedure that is performed with intravenous sedation type anesthesia.
It consists of placing endoscopically an expandable balloon-shaped device inside the stomach which is filled with approximately 600 ml of saline solution.
This balloon should be removed by another endoscopic procedure 6 months later.
In this period of time the balloon competes with food which generates:
- Lower gastric capacity for food
- Increased satiety
In-hospital stay: outpatient procedure.
Recovery time: 24 hours at rest at home and then moderate duty is recommended for 1 week (e.g. office work).
Ideal for mild overweight or as a “step” procedure to prepare for another major bariatric surgery.
Laparoscopic Bariatric
Surgery
With this method, the surgery is performed through small incisions and with rapid recovery.
Benefits of
laparoscopic surgery
- Rapid recovery
- Lower risk of hernias
- Lower risk of wound infections
Cholecystectomy
This procedure involves removing the gallbladder through small incisions. The patient has a much faster recovery and lower risk of hernias and wound infections.
We perform this surgery in patients with:
- Symptomatic cholecystolithiasis or cholecystitis: Gallstones or “stones” in the gallbladder with symptoms (pain). Acute or chronic onset
- Asymptomatic cholecystolithiasis: Gallstones equal or greater than 2 cm (3/4 in)
- Biliary sludge with symptoms
- Slow emptying gallbladder with symptoms
- History of biliary pancreatitis or gallstones in the bile duct (choledocholithiasis).
In-hospital stay: 24 hours.
Recovery time: two days of rest at home and then moderate duty is recommended for a month (e.g. office work).
Anti-reflux surgery
Hernia surgery
Appendectomy
Acute appendicitis is one of the most common urgent surgical diseases. The risk of perforation and peritonitis with sepsis increases in a matter of hours as the evolution time is prolonged. Laparoscopic appendectomy early allows:
- Quick recovery
- Less postoperative pain
- Smaller incisions
- Short hospital stay
In-hospital stay: 24 hours.
Recovery time: 1 day of rest at home and then moderate duty is recommended for a month (e.g. office work).
General Laparoscopic
Surgery
Laparoscopy is an innovative minimally invasive technique, that allows to perform general surgery procedures with smaller incisions (0.5 to 1 centimeter). Special instruments are introduced through each incision. A high-tech camera called a laparoscope assists the doctor with enlarged images in real time. You will have less pain, less recovery time, smaller scars and a quick return to everyday life.
